Teaching and doing recycling is teaching respect for the planet and ourselves.

Re: Letter regarding the recycling program at Calvary by the Sea Lutheran Church Pre-School

Our world has changed. Not so much because of what Mother Nature has done, or is doing, but because of what humans have been doing and the affects of our activity on our beautiful blue and green marble floating though space. The years of unrestricted “growth” and mindless development are over. What we create and what we use in order to make our creations, has an affect on the environment now, and will affect our children, and our children’s children… forever. Along with math, writing, the arts and sciences, we have entered the age where we must teach our children the importance of our relationships with other human beings, AND we must teach our children about our relationship and dependence on the resources we have been given on this beautiful planet.

Our pre-school is a very special learning place, we not only teach the basics of beginning the process of ‘growing up,’ but Montessori helps us learn about all the concepts of ‘respect.’ We learn to respect things, we learn to respect people, we learn to respect ourselves, and now, through the recycling program, we are learning about respecting the earth. Through the recycling program we learn about how everything we use is related to our environment and ultimately how even our very survival will depend on whether we learn the lessons of taking care of our environment, or not.

Our society as a whole has neglected to teach these important issues in recent years, but by teaching our children at a young age to re-use and recycle, we are truly helping our children attain a better understanding of themselves as members of the Global Family; and also what they can do right now, to help our planet, our neighborhood and ultimately themselves.

Thanks to everyone at the school, teachers, parents, students and the people who gather our recyclable materials and for getting this program started! It is an inspiration and example for the church, the island, our neighborhood as well as our families.

You can bring beverage bottles and cans to our pre-school on May 3 & 17. The bottles or cans must be washed, with no caps and have the HI 5 cent stamp on them. Please no wine bottles or bottles like apple sauce, spaghetti bottles, etc.

Thank you so much!

Pastor Tim Mason
