Adult Education and Future Plans: 2008 Annual Report
Our Sunday School program has been enthusiastically led by Renee and many other dedicated teachers all year. We do need to have new teachers for the upper elementary ages – please consider the gift of your time during this hour each week. The rewards are amazing! A thank-you luncheon for the current teachers was held in January 2008 and will be repeated in February 2009.
First Communion instruction was held for several children during Lent. This will be offered again in 2009, beginning March 15.
The initial Vacation Bible School program, the Rainforest Adventure, was a great success. We had 20 students and nearly as many helpers each evening for dinner, Bible stories, games, crafts, science and music. Plans are to continue the program in July 2009 with the “Discovery Canyon” curriculum. Backdrops are already being painted, but a director, publicity chair and group leaders are needed.
The Adult Forum, led by Karen Sisler, consists of six week discussions throughout the school year and once a month speakers through the summer.
Science and Religion Lectures, led by Dr. Bob Joseph, were a wonderful opportunity for members of Calvary and others from the community to consider the relationships between our knowledge of science and our understanding of religion. Attendance averaged over 20 for each of the six weeks. We hope to invite other speakers to come to Calvary to speak on topics of interest – for either one time only talks or series of several weeks.
Despite the best efforts of Garret Pick, the annual Trolley Ride to the Honolulu City Lights was cancelled at the last minute due to weather and safety issues.
The Education Committee is in urgent need of new members and a committee leader – please let us know if you have any interest in serving the educational needs of Calvary’s children, adults, or surrounding community. I thank you all for the opportunity to be of service over the past 18 months, but we will be moving back to the mainland in March 2009. I pray that all the learning opportunities at Calvary will be continued and expanded in the months and years ahead.
