On AUGUST 5TH, Faith Action Hawaiʻi supported Oʻahuʻs tax on empty homes. The Honolulu City Council introduced Bill 46 to put a tax on dwelling units that have sat empty for over half of the year. The proposed empty homes tax would eventually amount to 3% of the property’s value, although it would ramp up from 1% during the first year the tax is applied and 2% during the second year. The idea behind the proposed tax is that it would encourage homeowners to rent out their empty units to fill the housing shortage. Affordable housing and increase in housing inventory are the end goals of this bill.

WE LEARNED FROM TWO YOUNG JEWISH AMERICANS ON SATURDAY, MARCH 9TH @ 4PM
ISRAELISM uniquely explores how Jewish attitudes towards Israel are changing dramatically, with massive consequences for the region and for Judaism itself. Two young American Jews are raised to defend the state of Israel at all costs. When they witness Israel's mistreatment of the Palestinian people with their own eyes, they are horrified and heartbroken.
Faith Action and Calvary by the Sea sponsored and partnered with Jewish Voice for Peace to present this documentary. A panel shared their thoughts after the screening. As a Bold and Learning Congregation, CBTS supported the film and made time to be present. The screening was free, presented at Central Union Church. ABOUT THE DOCUMENTARY:
Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) is the largest progressive Jewish anti-Zionist organization in the world. They’re organizing a grassroots, multiracial, cross-class, intergenerational movement of U.S. Jews into solidarity with the Palestinian freedom struggle, guided by a vision of justice, equality, and dignity for all people. The Hawai‘i Chapter of JVP will sponsor a film screening of Israelism and a panel discussion with JVP members and a representative from the film. Israelism, directed by two first-time Jewish filmmakers who share a similar story to the film’s protagonists, uniquely explores how Jewish attitudes towards Israel are changing dramatically, with massive consequences for the region and for Judaism itself.
